Role & Persona Prompting: When It Works vs. When It Degrades Model Performance
One of the earliest and most widespread prompt engineering heuristics was Persona Prompting: beginning every interaction with "Act as an expert [Role]". However, recent empirical benchmarks from Stanford and DeepMind reveal a counter-intuitive reality: persona prompting frequently degrades performance on quantitative, mathematical, and algorithmic reasoning benchmarks.
When an LLM is told to act as a "world-class genius", the auto-regressive model prioritizes tokens associated with academic pomposity, rhetorical flair, and lengthy philosophical exposition, diluting the attention budget available for raw symbolic logic.
