About the role
As an API Engineer at TheWebVale, you will create well-structured API contracts and integration gateways for healthcare, education, and legal clients. You will ensure our endpoints are intuitive, strictly typed, fast, and easy for frontend developers and client partners to consume.
You will partner with frontend engineers and product leads to release API versions in two-to-three week cycles. You will champion API consistency, rate-limiting, and clear documentation across all client deliverables.
What you will do
- Design clean RESTful and GraphQL API contracts using OpenAPI and TypeScript.
- Implement secure authentication, API key generation, and rate-limiting rules.
- Optimize database query performance to keep API response latencies minimal.
- Build automated mock servers and contract tests to assist frontend developers.
- Maintain developer-facing documentation and interactive Swagger API explorers.
- Implement webhook delivery mechanisms with retry logic for partner systems.
What you will need
- Possess 3–5 years of dedicated experience designing and building APIs.
- Show advanced knowledge of HTTP protocols, REST standards, and GraphQL schemas.
- Demonstrate high proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, and modern backend frameworks.
- Have practical experience implementing OAuth2, JWT, and API key auth patterns.
- Understand caching mechanisms, ETag validation, and content negotiation.
- Write clear technical documentation that non-authors can follow effortlessly.
Nice to have
- Experience with GraphQL federation or Apollo Server implementations.
- Familiarity with API gateway solutions like Kong or Cloudflare API Shield.
- Knowledge of gRPC or protocol buffers for internal service communication.
