About the role
As a Backend Observability Engineer at TheWebVale, you will implement monitoring, distributed tracing, and log aggregation across our client applications. You will ensure our software for clinics, coaching networks, and retailers provides clear real-time health telemetry.
You will collaborate with backend developers and system administrators during our two-to-three week release cadences. You will establish actionable dashboards and early alerts so issues are caught and resolved before affecting users.
What you will do
- Instrument backend applications and APIs with OpenTelemetry and logging hooks.
- Configure centralized log collection and search using tools like Grafana Loki or ELK.
- Build operational dashboards displaying response times, error rates, and throughput.
- Set up actionable alert rules routed to Telegram, email, or incident channels.
- Analyze distributed trace waterfalls to isolate slow database queries and micro-delays.
- Create post-mortem templates and assist development teams in root-cause analyses.
What you will need
- Hold 3–5 years of backend engineering experience with strong observability skills.
- Demonstrate hands-on familiarity with Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or Loki.
- Show practical proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, and Linux server environments.
- Understand key operational metrics: latency, error rate, saturation, and traffic.
- Possess strong analytical skills to diagnose complex issues across service boundaries.
- Collaborate constructively with engineers to implement non-intrusive instrumentation.
Nice to have
- Experience monitoring containerized workloads in Docker or lightweight Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of APM tools such as Datadog, New Relic, or Sentry.
- Familiarity with structured JSON logging and log redaction for PII privacy.
